leaf springs are used in vehicles carring heavy loads like trucks.

then, why trains have helical spring?????????

I believe that dynamic loads in the vertical direction are more in trucks than in trains because trucks need to operate in difficult terrains, bumpy tracks, speed breakers, frequent and sudden stops and starts. Whereas, trains' motion is much more smoother. May be this is the reason why trucks employ leaf springs and trains have coil springs. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I just found one document on Design on springs which says (Attached)

More will be the spring index the lesser will be the curvature effect. For example, the suspensions in the railway carriages use...

Hope some one can add more insights to this

because the track of train is smooth it has to bear a constant load which is from weight of train...while truck has to bear the load and even the jerks and vibration produced by damaged roads
