IC Engine performance test

HI,

I came across an engine performance graph as attached:

I have basically two questions looking at that:

To do any engine / motor testing we keep some parameter constant - May be throttle position or applied load (torque) or speed or power. What is kept constant for this test?
In the torque Vs. engine speed curve, till 1750 rpm (approx.) the speed appears to be rising. I am little confused here. If torque rises, it means the load on the engine climbs up. Thus, should it not result in drop of the speed instead of rising?

I have these questions unresolved for long. Pl help. Thanks.

I think we could take advantage of the induced current, created inside a loop when it passes through a magnetic field. So placing the coil on an electric car and connecting it with the battery, the car will receive a small electrical charge when will pass through a magnetic field (to be created on every road traveled to a high enough speed since the induced current in a coil is proportional to speed at which it crosses the magnetic field).

Question about anylisis of critic section - Shaft Dimension

Hello everyone,

I'm a student of mechanical engineer in Portugal and I'm dimensioning a reducer. For that need to do shaft dimensioning for fatigue and by the ASME code. For both of them I need to study the forces in shaft and then make the diagrams of axial and shear diagram, and the bending moment diagrams.

My question reside in defining de amount of force in a section after make the diagram force. I will attach figures to you look at it and give me some feedback after.

Let me explain what is confusing me. Imagine that I have a shaft of 300 mm. I divided it into 3 sections.

1º - 0-100 mm
2º- 100 - 200 mm
3º- 200 - 300 mm

Let's considerer that in first I have traccion with the value of 1000 N, in second compression of 1500N, and in third traccion of 500 N.

What value should I considerer in section 2? 1000 of traccion or 1500 of compression?

I will put some images with the values I got and I hope u can tell the value of each section and what is the "protocol" to define them while we analyse a diagram of this kind. (altough with your values reply I should understand the method)

The Welding is an unavoidable process of modern engineering – civil, electrical,
mechanical, automobiles, marine aeronautical – in all branches. It is used in
fabrications and erections in infrastructures and installations. It joins metals
or thermoplastics.
The Hyperbaric welding OR UNDER WATER WELDING is the process of welding at elevated pressures, normally in underwater. It is of 2 types DRY & WET Welding. The Hyperbaric welding can either take place wet in the water itself OR dry inside. Here a specially constructed positive pressure enclosure is used and hence it is called dry welding. Similarly Hyperbaric welding term used in dry environment & underwater welding term used as in wet environment. The hyperbaric welding is used to repair damaged ships, under water pipe line & etc.

INTRODUCTION:-

The fact that electric arc could operate was known for over a 100 years. The first ever underwater welding was carried out by British Admiralty – Dockyard for sealing leaking ship rivets below the water line.
Underwater welding is an important tool for underwater fabrication works. In 1946, special waterproof electrodes were developed in Holland by ‘Van der Willingen’. In recent years the number of offshore structures including oil drilling rigs, pipelines, platforms are being installed significantly. Some of these structures will experience failures of its elements during normal usage and during unpredicted occurrences like storms, collisions. Any repair method will require the use of underwater welding.

UNDERWATER WELDING PRINCIPLES:-

Underwater welding can be performed under wet or dry conditions. Dry underwater welding refers to underwater welding which is performed under hyperbaric conditions (an underwater habitat is displacing the water with a gas at the prevailing pressure), and wet underwater welding refers to welding which is performed in fresh- or salt-water without a protecting habitat.
Wet underwater welding will here after be referred to as ―wet welding‖, and wet/dry underwater welding will simply be referred to as ―underwater welding‖. The most commonly used wet welding technique is shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), also known as manual metal arc (MMA) welding or informally as stick welding. The main differences for the welding equipment (wet welding equipment versus ―workshop‖ welding equipment) are shown in Figure 1. Note that wet underwater welding is performed by using a (usually motor generated) power source generating DC current only (for wet welding AC is not used on account of electrical safety and difficulty in maintaining a welding arc underwater), the inclusion of a single or dual pole knife switch (circuit breaker), which protects a welding diver from electrocution, and the use of double insulated cables. Both the power source and knife switch (capable of breaking the full wet welding current) are secured above water (grounded) and controlled (on the diver welders command) by an operator. The cross section of the welding cable is adjusted to the length of the cable and should be highly wear resistant (marine growth) and sufficiently flexible; special welding electrode holders are used with extra insulation against the ingress of water.

CLASSIFICATION OF UNDERWATER WELDING:-
The Underwater welding can be classified as:-
1) Wet Welding:- In wet welding the welding is performed underwater, directly exposed to the wet environment.
2) Dry Welding :- In dry welding, a dry chamber is created near the area to be welded and the welder does the job by staying inside the chamber

COMPONENTS OF WATER WELDING:-
Electrode Holder:-

Water Resistant Electrodes:-

The fundamental process of welding underwater does not differ from welding on land. An electrode carrying a direct current creates an arc of electricity. That arc is then applied to melt the target metal. The difference is that the electrodes used underwater are waterproof. Extra insulation around the connections ensure that the current will be able to generate the arc and not degrade the copper wiring. Doing this underwater presents a new set of risks. Both the risk of electrocution and the technical difficulty of maintaining the electrical arc underwater, is the reason why direct currents are used instead of alternating currents.
Line Diagram :

The power source should be a direct current machine rated at 300 or 400 amperes. Motor generator welding machines are most often used for underwater welding in the wet. The welding machine frame must be grounded to the ship. The welding circuit must include a positive type of switch, usually a knife switch operated on the surface and commanded by the welder-diver. The knife switch in the electrode circuit must be capable of breaking the full welding current and is used for safety reasons. The welding power should be connected to the electrode holder only during welding. Direct current with electrode negative (straight polarity) is used. Special welding electrode holders with extra insulation against the water are used. The underwater welding electrode holder utilizes a twist type head for gripping the electrode. It accommodates two sizes of electrodes. The electrode types used conform to AWS E6013 classification. The electrodes must be waterproofed. All connections must be thoroughly insulated so that the water cannot come in contact with the metal parts. If the insulation does leak, seawater will come in contact with the metal conductor and part of the current will leak away and will not be available at the arc. In addition, there will be rapid deterioration of the copper cable at the point of the leak.

I would like to know couple of things ?

1. With U shaped manometer attached to the surface of the pipe we are measuring static pressure drop? Pressure exerted by the water on the surface of that pipe? Am i right ?
2. Is that pressure field uniform for some observed cross sectional area of the pipe ? I know that pressure is the function of length. But for some cross section is it distributed equally ( radial ( circular) , in all directions ) among the pipe wall ?
3. in central heating closed circuit installation, what gives the pressure of 6bar in pipes if it is not the centrifugal pump? If it is, how is kinetic energy of the flow transferred in the pressure energy.
Somewhere i read that "common misconception about pumps is the thought that
they create pressure. Pumps alone do not create pressure;
they only displace fluid, causing a flow. Adding resistance
to flow causes pressure " ?
4. I' confused about that, how adding resistance to flow causes pressure, it would be more natural that is cousins pressure to drop ( head loss ).. but than, what generates pressure ?

5. I know that we have head loss in pipes due to a friction and local resistances like bends, valves, change of pipes diameter ..etc. We all know how to calculate them using Darcy - Weisbach formula. I also know from Brenuli equation that with larger diameter i have less friction losses, lower velocity and gather static pressure and vice verse.

But how is than possible that for same diameter of the pipe , same average velocity, same volume flow ....i still have static pressure drop . I understand the reasons ( listed above) I understand the math.....but i don't understand physics of that phenomena ?
Can somebody enplane me in plane English what is relay going on in there. .. Just some simple Cause and affect story line.

now i'm doing FYP, i need to analyze a welding branch in pipe using ansys workbench 13.
First I analyze using steady state thermal then i need to couple the model to statical structural (pressure).
i have a problem to make couple model. i can link engineering data to engineering data, geometry to geometry, solution to setup, but why i cant link model to model?

The other problem is i cant define new material in ansys 13. Actually i import the geometry from autodesk inventor. Thanks.

design a feed magazine for laptop computer hard drives to integrate into an existing electronic data destruction machine.this machine will be used to dispose of informaation technology devices and media.

it is to be designed for 4 inches wide x 5 3/4 inches long x 1 inch thick desktop computer hard drives and to handle laptop computer hard drives that are 2 3/4 inches wide x 4 inches long and vary from 5/16 inches thick to 11/16 inches thick.the majority of these drives are 5/16 inches thick.

the magazine must hold a minimum of 12 drives.

i am required to come up with a production magazine system that easily adapts to the existing machine and should be simple and safe to use.not requiring special training to install,load and use.

Clearing the operation specification of various equipments in sand making production line is very necessary for the safe to human body and equipment application.
Because it is a series of equipments instead of one sand making machine from starting the sand production line to its normal operation, the operation is a very rigorous work, so there must be a professional personnel to start it. Owning to the multi-equipment, hard work, high degree of difficulty, which requires the staff very well master the run and operation steps. We will introduce few operation specification and matters need attention in the operation, and the details are as follows:
Matters need attention when starting a sand making production line : after preparation, according to the provisions of the driving sequence operation to start the main motor, when starting the motor we shoul pay attention to the current meter of the control cabinet, after starting the peak current for 30-40s, the current will reduce to a normal operating current value. In the normal operation, we also should pay attention to current which should not be more than the specified value. After the normal operation of the jaw crusher, it can actuate the feeding machine, and according to the block size and the operating condition of the jaw crusher adjust the feeding machine belt and change the feed quantity. Usually, the material stacking height in the crushing cavity should not more than the 2 / 3 of crushing chamber, and the diameter of the materials should not be more than the 50%-60% of the inlet width, the jaw crusher has a highest production capacity at this condition. When the materials with larger piece, it will cause blockage affecting the normal production. To prevent metal ( such as the spade teeth, crawler plate, bits ) from entering the jaw crusher and avoid damaging the machine, it should be brought out when they pass through the jaw crusher to prevent causing accident; when the electrical equipment automatic trip, if the cause is unknown, forbid forced continuous starting.

How to Work Correctly of Roller Bearing?

Roller bearing should be cleaned before installation . Installation , we should use special tools to auxiliary evenly pressed into the bearing straight , and do not hand hammer percussion , specifically prohibiting direct hammer bearing . When the bearing seat and seat hole with loose , shall repair housing bore or replacement of the bearing ,and do not use to play in the bearing surface or  reluctant to use the method of the pad copper pitting . Rolling bearing equipment disassembly and assembly  should use the appropriate pull out the bearing , do not use chisels , hammers and other percussion bearings.
Bearing lubrication：Roller bearing lubricants are commonly used lubricants and grease . When the bearer circumference speed is less than 4-5m/s , or automotive lubricating oil can not be used on the lubricating parts,general using grease lubrication . Grease lubricated  has the advantage of simple seal structure,can't easy to drain grease , little affected by temperature , plus a grease can be used longer .
Lubricating oil has the advantage of friction is small,heat output , mainly for high-speed and high ambient temperature of the roller bearings .  According to the requirements of automotive manual selection lubricating oil chooses grades, and then the timely replacement of vehicle maintenance cycle , releasing the old oil, cleaning of the body, adding new oil , fuel lines should be added to the prescribed standard , or flush with the fuel filler ( depending on vehicle specific structure requirements) , not more.

I need to store medicine (rectangular) boxes in a rectangular shaped tube.
I have to DROP boxes from the top of that tube. they will drop with gravty. boxes are light catoon medicine boxes.

Of course, even I drop then as their wide side looks below, because of friction, small hits to the borders
of the storage tubes, their position will change while they drop.

What I need is a mechanical design of tube, maybe with some shapes or planes in it, so,
as boxes drop about 2 meters, at the bottom, this design will align boxes an in the picture.
they should be stored vertically not horizontally.

Problem with Newton's cradle ANSYS WB 13.0

Hi,

I'm doing a school project where I'm supposed to create a Newton cradle i ANSYS Workbench 13.0. My problem is that i can't even get it to swing. See attachment for geometry and settings.

It consist of a 2-D surface model, a string as the "line" 4 x 80 mm with a vertex, and a circle D = 30 mm, with shared nodes.

The vertex of the line is attached with a remote displacement that is zero in X- and Y-direction and free rotation about Z. A Standard earth gravitation is also applied.

The only thing that happens is that it moves like 5 degrees (12 mm deformation) I have tried to change the time interval and a lot of other stuff. ATM it is a static structure, Does it need to be transient? Tried that too but can't make it work either.
