ANSYS WB coupled model and define new material, help!

Hello,
now i'm doing FYP, i need to analyze a welding branch in pipe using ansys workbench 13.
First I analyze using steady state thermal then i need to couple the model to statical structural (pressure).
i have a problem to make couple model. i can link engineering data to engineering data, geometry to geometry, solution to setup, but why i cant link model to model?

The other problem is i cant define new material in ansys 13. Actually i import the geometry from autodesk inventor. Thanks.

instruction manual of Sand washing plant

Clearing the operation specification of various equipments in sand making production line is very necessary for the safe to human body and equipment application.
Because it is a series of equipments instead of one sand making machine from starting the sand production line to its normal operation, the operation is a very rigorous work, so there must be a professional personnel to start it. Owning to the multi-equipment, hard work, high degree of difficulty, which requires the staff very well master the run and operation steps. We will introduce few operation specification and matters need attention in the operation, and the details are as follows:
Matters need attention when starting a sand making production line : after preparation, according to the provisions of the driving sequence operation to start the main motor, when starting the motor we shoul pay attention to the current meter of the control cabinet, after starting the peak current for 30-40s, the current will reduce to a normal operating current value. In the normal operation, we also should pay attention to current which should not be more than the specified value. After the normal operation of the jaw crusher, it can actuate the feeding machine, and according to the block size and the operating condition of the jaw crusher adjust the feeding machine belt and change the feed quantity. Usually, the material stacking height in the crushing cavity should not more than the 2 / 3 of crushing chamber, and the diameter of the materials should not be more than the 50%-60% of the inlet width, the jaw crusher has a highest production capacity at this condition. When the materials with larger piece, it will cause blockage affecting the normal production.
Store boxes on their large side with gravity.

I need to store medicine (rectangular) boxes in a rectangular shaped tube.
I have to DROP boxes from the top of that tube. they will drop with gravty. boxes are light catoon medicine boxes.

Of course, even I drop then as their wide side looks below, because of friction, small hits to the borders
of the storage tubes, their position will change while they drop.

What I need is a mechanical design of tube, maybe with some shapes or planes in it, so,
as boxes drop about 2 meters, at the bottom, this design will align boxes an in the picture.
they should be stored vertically not horizontally.

any idea will be helpful my friends. thanks.

Hi,

I'm doing a school project where I'm supposed to create a Newton cradle i ANSYS Workbench 13.0. My problem is that i can't even get it to swing. See attachment for geometry and settings.

It consist of a 2-D surface model, a string as the "line" 4 x 80 mm with a vertex, and a circle D = 30 mm, with shared nodes.

The vertex of the line is attached with a remote displacement that is zero in X- and Y-direction and free rotation about Z. A Standard earth gravitation is also applied.

The only thing that happens is that it moves like 5 degrees (12 mm deformation) I have tried to change the time interval and a lot of other stuff. ATM it is a static structure, Does it need to be transient? Tried that too but can't make it work either.

Heat recovery from sooted flue gas

Dear all,

I have an idea to recover heat from our boiler which is used for heating oil tanks. The exhaust gas of the boiler is usually between 210-230 C and I believe there is a significant amount of heat there that can be recovered. We use heavy oil as the fuel for the boiler. The products of the combustion has a significant amount of soot. That's where the problem begins. The soot will surely drastically reduce the heat transfer which will cause inefficient heat recovery. Manual cleaning of soot will be painful. At this point, what kind of exhaust waste heat recovery along with an appropriate soot removal system would you recommend?

Any idea will be helpful.

Thanks.

hello,
during my work i heard that stainless steel 330 used for building industrials ovens (the metal used
to conduct the heat to the model). I searched for datasheet but havent find anything unusual about
this metal (compare to Stainless steel 304, 316,,,). can anyone tell me why this metal used for those
applications?
thank u all,

types of hydraulic pumps

Many different methods are used to classify pumps. Terms such as positive displacement, non positive displacement, fixed delivery, variable delivery, low pressure, high pressure and other terms used to describe the pump. The first two terms are the fundamental terms to describe the pump. That is, all pumps are either positive displacement pumps or non positive displacement pumps. In other words, the method that is used to supply the energy to the liquid determines the category into which the pump is placed.

So, there are two main categories of pumps:

Roto-Dynamic pumps (non positive displacement pumps).

Positive displacement pumps.

Pumps duties may be range from a low pressure of a fraction of a bar and small capacities of a few litters per minute to a high pressure of several hundred bars and large capacities so, each of those categories has sub-groups consisting different types of pumps as shown in the following diagram:

Basically, pumps that discharge (pump) liquid in continuous flow are referred to non positive displacement pumps (Roto-Dynamic pumps) and those pumps that discharge liquid separated by a period of no discharge are referred to positive displacement pumps.

Why electronic ignition system?

Why should we think about a new ignition system?

Because the conventional (mechanical) system has two main problems:

1- The high voltage that is generated in the secondary winding depends on the primary current.

(You should notice that to obtain higher voltage, you can do two things: increasing the dwell angle or increasing the value of the primary current).

2- The primary current in the conventional coil doesn't exceed 5 amber to protect the contact points of the breaker point from damage when the primary current passes through it.

What about the new system?
Electronic type of ignition system provides a hotter and more uniform spark. This promotes more efficient burning of air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber producing less exhaust emissions resulting in best engine performance.

The main difference between the electronic system and the mechanical system
In the mechanical system, the primary current is interrupted by a mechanical switch (breaker point), but in electronic type of ignition system the primary current is interrupted by an electronic switch.

The electronic switch is a transistor. The transistor is a semiconductor ( is a material, usually solid chemical element or compound, that can either conduct electricity under some conditions or be insulator under other conditions) that has three terminals: base, emitter and collector. When an electric current passes through its base, it becomes a conductor but, when there is no electric current passes through transistor base, transistor becomes an insulator. To realize how the transistor works, let's watch this video together:
http://www.urcar-eng...d-ignition.html

When the transistor becomes a conductor, the primary circuit is switched on and the magnetic flux is generated. As the transistor becomes an insulator, the primary circuit is switched off, the magnetic flux is collapsed, the high voltage is created and the spark is generated.

Generating the transistor base current
The transistor base current is generated by a signal generator located in the ignition distributor. The signal generator type could differ from engine to another engine where there are three types of the signal generator:

breaker point generator.

hall effect generator.

pick up coil generator.

Breaker point transistorized ignition system
In this system, the signal given to transistor base is by the breaker point used in the mechanical system, but there is no condenser in this case because the passing current is very small (0.3A). This means higher life time (3-4 years) and generating higher primary current resulting in higher voltage.

Hall effect transistorized ignition system

Hall effect can be located inside the ignition distributor. Hall effect generator operates by the using voltage created when a current carrying in the conductor (interrupter ring) is exposed to magnetic field as shown in the following figure:

Hall devices are made of semiconductors because it produces a better effect. The hall effect sensor is triggered by passing an iron vane (metal shutter) through the air gap where an interrupter ring ,which has a number of iron vanes (metal shutters) equaled to the number of engine cylinders, is rotated by the distributor shaft moving the metal shutters through the air gap as shown in the following figures. In this position, the transistor base is activated by a signal (Hall voltage), the transistor allows current for passing from emitter to collector to the primary winding producing magnetic flux in the circuit.

When continuous rotation, the vanes repeatedly move in and out of the air gap, so the voltage signal will appear and disappear.

Pick up coil transistorized type

This system consists of a gear (reluctor wheel), that is mounted on the distributor shaft, has a number of teeth equaled to number of engine cylinders, permanent magnet and pick up coil wrapped around the magnet. The magnet and the pick up coil are fixed on the distributor base plate. The pick up coil senses when a gear tooth passes toward the permanent magnetic. Thus the transistor base is activated.

As a senior with shoulder problems, I have great difficulty starting up a number of gasoline powered devices that I still have need to operate. I am wondering if anyone as devised either a machine that can be used to facilitate pull cords, or better yet, designed a manual or spring wound system where a cord can be pulled slowly and only when it is released will the crank-shaft be turned.

The Truth about Indian Made Industrial V Belts

Only a few years back, any industrialist would tell you how only imported machine parts and factory essentials were to be trusted, and of the poor quality of local supplies from V belt manufacturers and other such simple products. Today, the story has taken a complete turn about. Now, companies know from the most complicated gadgets to the simple Vee belts, India is a better bet. With local production, their quality was poor before because of the lack of scrutiny, testing, and right raw materials. However, the industrial developments in India have changed that.

You can always find products like Industrial V belts in the local market from a variety of companies. Their prices range widely, and so does their quality. So how will you trust the right domestic manufacturer? The answer lies in careful sampling and testing, as well as regular quality checks on orders. Mumbai is one of the biggest economic cities of the planet, and it is India’s financial and commercial capital. From the smallest manufacturers to the best industrial equipment and peripheral manufacturers, everyone has a strong and competitive base in and around Mumbai.

If you want to get the best factory supplies like Vee Belts, Indian V belt manufacturers can quite satisfactorily meet your demands. While quality may have been a factor a few years back, the rapid rise of the country’s economy and technology overall has greatly reduced manufacturing costs and enhanced production quality. You don’t need to depend on supplies from abroad when Industrial V belts and many such types of equipment are made in India.

Hi everyone,

I have two aluminium detail with flat surfaces, that I want to connect one to another. (let's say around 2-3 cm2). One of them is on the top and it fixed to my setup. Another one is on the bottom. There will be a distance between them around 3-5 mm for PCB, that will be connected to the bottom part.

I want to have an opportunity to easily disconnect the bottom part with pcb. I mean no screws and nuts.
I am thinking about some spring - like in a pen - click - and it fixed, another click and it unfixed. Or some nut with no thread, but with a button to fix/unfix it.

Please, advice me some keywords, with which I will be able to find some suitable solution in a shops. Or advice me your solution,
Thanks in advance!

Dwell angle

Dwell angle is the angle of rotation of the distributor through which the primary circuit is closed or it is the time where the breaker point is closed. It is designed by the manufacturer according to the number of cylinders of the vehicle engine. For example: the dwell angle of 4-cylinders engine may vary between (25-48), but the dwell angle of 6-cylinders engine may vary between (36-40). In general, the dwell angle is between (30-60) degrees.

The dwell angle can be defined by the gap. The gap is the distance between the two contact points when they are very fully opened. The wider the gap, the smaller the dwell angle.

Know the function of any pump

Pump is a mechanical device which converts the mechanical energy of its driving unit ( electric motor, gas turbine, steam turbine, wind turbine, ......etc) into hydraulic energy. This hydraulic energy increases the energy of the pumped liquid and enabled it overcome the static head and the hydraulic losses of the piping system in which the pump is interposed.

The method that is used to supply the energy to the pumped liquid determines the category into which the pump is placed, so there are two types of categories where the pump can be classified: Roto-dynamic pumps and positive displacement pumps. We will discuss these types in details through the next article.

Spark ignition timing

To remember the important points of the previous article, you can watch this video:

http://urcar-engine.blogspot.com/2011/11/spark-ignition-timing.html

The timing of ignition is usually produced before the piston reaches the TDC by the end of the compression stroke. The spark timing may vary from 5 to 40 degrees before TDC. This is required to utilize from the maximum cylinder pressure. The fuel also needs a period to start the ignition. This period is called delay ignition period. Delay period is divided into two periods: chemical delay period and physical delay period. The period that is required to be the chemical bonds of fuel molecules are broken is called chemical delay period. The period that is required for the fuel to be as vapor form. The delay period is determined according to chemical construction of fuel and fuel volatility.

The optimum spark ignition timing is usually experimentally selected to produce the maximum cylinder pressure, max torque, max torque and minimum specific fuel consumption. The optimum spark timing varies with engine speed and loads. The ignition distributor contains mechanisms to adjust spark timing for different loads and speeds:

Centrifugal (governor) advance mechanism.

Vacuum advance mechanism.

Ignition time is controlled by centrifugal advance according to engine speed and by vacuum advance according to engine load.

Setting the spark timing according to engine speed:

When your vehicle is running at high speed, this means the crank shaft speed (rpm) increases and consequently the cam shaft speed increases also (the cam shaft speed is equaled to half crank shaft speed in 4- stroke engine). At the time that the electric circuit is opened, the rotor in the distributor is in the contact with the high voltage lead and the spark is generated. The distributor rotor is driven by a gear on the cam shaft, so increasing engine speed retards the spark timing and leads to power loss.

The centrifugal advance mechanism (governor advance) is responsible for advancing the spark timing with the increasing of engine speed. The centrifugal advance mechanism is located inside the ignition distributor. The centrifugal advance consists of fly weights, cam plate and governor springs. The cam plate rotates together with distributor shaft. As increasing of engine speed, the movement of fly weights under centrifugal force advances the angular position of the cam relative to distributor shaft. The cam plate moves the rotor in the direction of rotation until the centrifugal force balances with springs force. In this new cam position, the contact points open early and the spark is advanced.

Setting the spark timing according to different loads

We know well that the different modes of engine are:

At starting: rich mixture (F/A=1/9).

At part load: lean mixture (A/F=1/18).

At full load: rich mixture (A/F=1/12).

At no load or idling (A/F=1/9).

When the mixture is rich, the flame speed is faster than in case of lean mixture. When your vehicle is running at part load, the flame speed is the slowest and the time of combustion process that occurs inside the combustion chamber is the largest, so it must advance the spark timing during engine part load to ensure complete combustion and maximum brake power.

The vacuum advance mechanism is responsible for advancing the spark timing during engine part load operation. The vacuum advance mechanism is connected to a small port above the throttle valve. The vacuum pressure pulls the diaphragm and the breaker plate moves in the opposite direction of rotation by vacuum force. In this new cam position, the contact points open early and the spark is advanced.

I am trying to model a mems resonator using comsol software, and the core of the resonator is a Piezoelectric rectangular plate clamped at the center on either sides (center of the length). For our resonator to work, this structure must vibrate in contour or in plane mode with little or no out of plane deformation. What are the conditions for this to happen?? Also, can anyone please tell me how to calculate the vibrational fundamental modes or eigenfrequency for this structure?

The image is presented on that link (the rectangle only). I am also interested in the length extensional mode (deformation along the length) and woul be very grateful if someone could explain it or direct me to some place with answers. Being an electronics engineer, it is proving to be a lot to swallow. Would appreciate any help.

Spark ignition system is the system that is responsible for occurring a spark in 4-stroke engine to be the fuel is burned and the heat energy is generated. We need a spark only in 4-stroke engine (SI) because the fuel used in this engine is gasoline and the gasoline starts to burn at high temperature (gasoline has high self ignition temperature). On the other hand, diesel is the fuel that has low self ignition temperature where The high pressure exerted on the fuel causes self ignition temperature then starts to burn, so you don't need an electric source to cause ignition in the diesel engine. There are three types of spark ignition system: conventional coil (mechanical system)( it was produced during the period from 1934 to1986), electronic (transistorized) ignition system (it was produced during the period from 1965 to 1993), and distributor-less ignition system (from 1982 till now). We will discuss in this article the mechanical type.

Any spark ignition system must achieve two main tasks:

Creating a high voltage from low volt source (12 volt) where the voltage that is required to the spark plug is somewhere between (20,000 to 50,000).

Controlling the timing of ignition (it must generate a spark at the right time in the right cylinder) according to rpm of the engine and engine load (engine mode).

The spark ignition system is divided into two main circuits: primary circuit and secondary secondary. The primary circuit consists of battery, ignition switch, primary winding, condenser, breaker point. The secondary circuit consists of secondary winding, distributor cover, high tension lead and spark plug.

Let's look at the main parts of this system:

Battery: is a type of rechargeable batteries that supplies electric energy to automobile. This battery is made up plates of lead and separate plates of lead dioxide that is submerged in electrolyte solution of about 35% sulfuric acid and 65% water. This causes a chemical reaction that releases electrons allowing them to flow through conductors to produce electricity. The battery is usually lead acid type that is made of six galvanic cells in series to provide a 12 volt system. Each cell provides 2 volt in the group. Heavy vehicles such as highway trucks that equipped by diesel engine use two batteries in series for a 24 volt system. To measure the concentration of acid, you can use hydrometer device where;

When the concentration of sulfuric acid in the battery is 1.28,this means fully charged.

When the concentration of sulfuric acid in the battery is 1.2, this means half charged.

When the concentration of sulfuric acid in the battery is 1.1, this means discharged.

Ignition coil (transformer): contains primary winding and secondary winding. The coil primary winding contains 100 to 150 turns of heavy copper wire. This wire is very thickness wire because the the primary winding is low voltage lead that has high current that leads to high temperature. Also, the wire of primary winding must be insulated so that the voltage doesn't jump from loop to loop. The coil secondary winding has number of turns 100 times greater than that is in primary winding for an important reason?(why). The coil secondary winding is sit inside the coil primary winding. The windings are wrapped around a soft iron core as shown in this figure.

The condenser is a simple capacitor that store a small amount of current. The breaker point is attached with an eccentric cam that makes rotation motion so, the contact breaker opens and closes. The condenser and breaker point are connected in parallel. The cam takes its motion from distributor shaft. The distributor shaft is driven by a gear on the cam shaft. The cam has many loops as number of cylinders.

The spark plug has two electrodes: insulated central electrode and ground electrode. The insulated central electrode is connecting by an insulated wire to magneto circuit. There is an air gap between the central electrode and the ground electrode. When the central electrode is supplied with high voltage, the current passes from the central electrode to ground electrode in the form of spark.

The main idea of the spark ignition system

When the key of your car is turned, the ignition switch is closed and the current is going through coil primary winding (low voltage lead). We talked that the windings are wrapped around iron core. We know from electricity that electric current always produces magnetic field even if the wire itself isn't made of an magnetic material or there isn't any magnetic material sits the wire so, a magnetic flux is generated and cut the turns of primary winding and the secondary winding.

We can remember that V primary / V secondary α n primary / n secondary, but this relation is right if the rate of collapse of the magnetic flux is equaled to zero (dΦ/dt =0).

So, we need to covert DC current from the battery source to AC current to achieve dΦ/dt =0. The conversion from DC to AC is proceed by the breaker point that opens and closes due to the rotation motion of the cam. When the contact breaker is opened (contact points aren't touched), this means that the electric circuit is opened in this direction. If the current passes through the gap between contact breaker, the arcing between the two points occurs causing damage in breaker point. Also the quick rate of connecting of circuit and its open causes wear and damage in breaker point.

The condenser plays a very important task to protect the breaker point from arcing where storing the current when the circuit is opened. We can say in other words, that the condenser protects the breaker point from arcing when the rate of collapse of magnetic flux is occurred (dΦ/dt =0). According to the above relation, high voltage will be generated in the coil secondary winding due to higher turns as mentioned previously (the number of turns for secondary winding is 100-150 times greater than that is in primary winding). Any engine contains a certain number of cylinders, for example: 4-cylinder engine, 6-cylinder engine. To ensure occurring a spark in each cylinder in the right place at the right time, we need a mechanism that achieves this function. The distributor does this function where it can distribute the high voltage to all the spark plugs that are located at the top of the cylinder heads according to firing order at the right time.

At the time that the electric circuit is opened causing collapse in the rate of magnetic field, the rotor in the distributor is in the contact with high voltage lead and the spark is generated. The spark is usually produced before the piston reaches the TDC by the end of compression stroke. The spark timing may vary between 5-40 degrees before TDC.

At this point, we are realized the first task of the ignition system "creating a high voltage from a low voltage source where the voltage that is required to the spark plug is between (20,000-50,000) volt". We will resume the second task of the spark ignition system the next week.

Engineering Help for a Pistol Accessory

Hey All,

First of all, I'm not an engineer so please excuse any incorrect terminology.

I am looking for help with a patent pending accessory that mounts onto a pistol. I am located in FL, USA and would love to either find someone in the state (preferred) or online who has experience with firearms and the forces the mount would be subjected to. Specific knowledge of the 1911 would be extraordinarily helpful!

I have functioning prototypes, but am running into 3 issues:

1) Durability issue with higher round count (either caused by forces involved, improper dimensions, or ?)
2) Fit issues with wide variance in tolerances by manufacturer
3) Mounting/Locking device or solution that will hold up under use and the forces involved, as well as allow for easy removal of the mount.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

G

p.s. Also, does anyone know of any engineering forums specifically geared towards firearm design and manufacture?

a fresherr nervous about an interview tomorow.specifics needed

hey..i am a fresh graduate mechanical engineer and still jobless.i have an interview tomorow at Pak Suzuki Motor Company. (PSMCL)which is a company assembling and distributing Suzuki Japan's cars in Pakistan. Currently it is the largest car assembler in Pakistan.

i will b interviewed for the post of management trainee PRODUCTION.
the following are the questions i think will feature throughout the interview:
1.why such a meagre GPA(2.9/4)?

2.i was part of a final year project team who had to design and fabricate a HHO system to be installed into the car and investigate the effects on the fuel consumption.though it wasnt my idea but that it was thrown down at me by my group mates who did not work on it,neither planning nor its execution.i did all the experimentations at my home..bought material from the market..tested all configurations and concepts of an HHO cell.finally decided with the dry-cell but fell deadly short of time.had to submit and demonstrate it a day after being though the final exams.so as soon as i got over with the exams i went up to a car mechanic...he altered the carburetor jet of a gasoline generator and we observed the proposed decrease in fuel consumption by using a 50 ml syringe full of petrol and a stop watch..i was glad i succeeded.and then again i managed all this single handedly..and submitted the report to the examiner despite the disappointment of not being able to install this thing in the car and run it...

how should i express all this in a more formal way to the interviewer..he would be most interested in knowing WHAT skill has been demonstrated here?..and how can i be helpful to them.
3.as u know this is an automobile and motorcycle assembling company.and as i am being interviwed for the post of production engineer, what possible TECHNICAL questions should i expect?how much related to internal combustion engines, manufacturing processes, machines, thermodynamics, ?
please elucidate

thank you..i hope you people understand my nervousnes

Steering mechanism for Semi-trailer trucks?

Hello guys. I'm new to this forum and this is my first post on the forum!!

Well I'm a third year mechanical engineering student of the University of Kerala! In our 5th semester, we've got Theory of Machines and in that subject we've learned about Steering Mechanism in Automobiles.

As per what we have learned, for a front steering vehicle, the wheels are mounted on a stub axle which is pin jointed to the front axle. As the the vehicle turns on the road the front wheels should make a concentric circle with their centers at the Instantaneous centers which lies in line with the rear axle!

Here's the image showing what is said above.

Well now as I was pondering over this, I thought, well, then how does those huge 18-wheeler semi trailer trucks steer? Does their instantaneous center coincide with the rear axle of the truck or with the rear axle of the trailer?

I hope this is not a dumb question!!

Mechanical Aerospace Engineering design

For the mechanically minded, there’s nothing more exciting than watching ideas be transformed from initial thoughts and sketches into 3D models and working prototypes. Autodesk’s mechanical design products, such as Autodesk® Inventor® make this process more accessible.
Mechanical engineers design a broad spectrum of parts, tools, assemblies, and machines. They typically focus on power-producing machines (such as motors, turbines, and engines) and power-using machines (such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, robots, and machine tools). A degree in mechanical engineering can also open doors to other careers. Many engineering graduates move into professions such as medicine, law, and business where their engineering background is a valuable asset.
Aerospace Engineers:

Reach for the stars as you create tomorrow's flying machines—from passenger airplanes to orbiting spacecraft. Aerospace engineers design, develop, and test aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles, and they supervise manufacturing these products. Aeronautical engineers work with aircraft. Astronautical engineers work specifically with spacecraft.

Aerospace engineers develop new technologies for use in aviation, defense systems, and space exploration, often specializing in areas such as structural design, guidance, and navigation and control. They may also specialize in a particular type of aerospace product, such as commercial transports, helicopters, or military aircraft and satellites.

how to calculate Youngs Modulus

Hello everybody....

We know that youngs modulus(E) is stress/strain. In case of free body thermal expansion, if the material is allowed to expand and contract freely, than there are no stresses developed in the body. The body has only strains.

This means the stresses are zero in case of free expansion. So in this case youngs modulus E will also be zero because E=stress/strain. But E cannot be zero since it is a material property....so what will be the value of E when stresses are zero?
or how do you calculate E when the stresses are zero (since E=stress/strain)?
